The most important reason for having a Columbarium is the comfort, support and witness such a facility provides for the members of our church family. The concept of interment or inurnment in consecrated church property is an old one, dating from the very beginnings of Christianity, and is sound for both theological and practical reasons. The church is a Christian spiritual home on earth, the place where brothers and sisters in Christ meet to worship God and fellowship with each other. They become members of the Body of Christ through baptism, are confirmed, married and ultimately sent into eternal life with the prayers and remembrances of their congregation. Internment or inurnment in church property is recognition of belief in the communion of saints, both living and dead, and it is a witness to faith in the resurrectionto eternal life. Church interment or inurnment provides a permanent link between the deceased and their place of worship while enabling their surviving family members, friends, and fellow worshippers to pay frequent respects during regular church visits. Another practical consideration is that cremation is considerably less expensive than burial. While a costly casket is not required for any Christian burial, it is certainly not needed for cremation, nor is a cemetery lot. |
