In 2005, a 23 year civil war between northern and southern Sudan came to an end as the Comprehensive Peace Agreement was signed between the Government of Sudan and the Sudanese Peoples Liberation Army. As peace settled back over the homeland of the thousands who had fled during the longest civil war in African history, men, women, and children returned to their homeland in southern Sudan, only to find the infrastructure destroyed and resources unavailable to enable them to begin their lives anew. The population continues to mushroom, while development and sustainability are strangers in a time of desperation. Casualties of war still come... in the form of malnutrition and disease... poverty in its rawest form is a mirror of what humanity can impose on humanity when Christ is replaced by greed and hate. In an environment where humanitarian need is so great, the United Methodist Church can be in its purest form. Our denomination is structured to bring healing to the ills brought on by humanity and to bring hope through Christ Jesus to a people clinging to the present and reaching for the future. Together we will explore how our resources, visions, opportunities, and prayers can bring about a change in the present that will lead to a lasting peace and promise for the future. We welcome you to the Sudan Summit, where we all will share in the experience of “Amazing Grace.”
