Our United Methodist Social Creed

We believe in God, Creator of the world; and in Jesus Christ, the Redeemer of creation.  We believe in the Holy Spirit, through whom we acknowledge God's gifts, and we repent of our sin in misusing these gifts to idolatrous ends.
We affirm the natural world as God's handiwork and dedicate ourselves to its preservation, enhancement, and faithful use by humankind.
We joyfully receive for ourselves and others the blessings of community, sexuality, marriage, and the family.
We commit ourselves to the rights of men, women, children, youth, young adults, the aging, and people with disabilities; to improvement of the quality of life; and to the rights and dignity of all persons.
We believe in the right and duty of persons to work for the glory of God and the good of themselves and others and in the protection of their welfare in so doing; in the rights to property as a trust from God, collective bargaining, and responsible consumption; and in the elimination of economic and social distress.
We dedicate ourselves to peace throughout the world, to the rule of justice and law among nations, and to individual freedom for all people of the world.
We believe in the present and final triumph of God's Word in human affairs and gladly accept our commission to manifest the life of the gospel in the world. Amen.

First Broad Street UMC Responds to…….

The Natural World

All creation is the Lord’s, and we are responsible for the ways in which we use and abuse it. (Opening statement from paragraph 160 in The Book of Discipline)

November 18th 2008 has been declared “Caring for God’s Creation Sunday” at First Broad Street United Methodist Church. This will be a day in which we as a congregation celebrate and embrace all of God’s creation through our worship in word and song. We, as a people of God, will be reminded of ways in which we can pattern our lives so that we honor and respect the creation around us. In remembering to be thankful to God, we will aid generation after generation in coming to know God as the author of all creation. Each household will receive a reusable grocery bag and an energy-efficient light bulb. The grocery bag can be taken on each trip to the supermarket and used to transport groceries home. This will prevent the use of plastic which is helpful to the environment. The light bulb is energy efficient which uses much less electricity. This is more cost effective as well as environmentally friendly.

The Nurturing Community

H) Family Violence and Abuse – We recognize that family violence and abuse in all its forms-verbal, psychological, physical, sexual-is detrimental to the covenant of the human community. We encourage the Church to provide a safe environment, counsel, and support for the victim. While we deplore the actions of the abuser, we affirm that person to be in need of God’s redeeming love. (from paragraph 161 of the Social Principles)

First Broad Street will host author Rozetta Mowery during our Mission Celebration February 22 – 24, 2008. Rozetta will share her story of living in abuse and how, through God’s grace, she now is able to share this same message of grace with others. Her book, “Tragedy in Tin Can Holler” will be available and she will be here to autograph them for you.
