The Art and Soul Program at FBSUMC
Children's Music
We as musicians and worship skill specialists at First Broad Street are given a tremendous responsibility to serve God in the highest manner possible. We are communicators and stewards of His Holy word. We are teachers who spread the Good News in a special way. The Music program believes that for youth and children to learn to worship they must attend worship on a regular basis beginning at as early an age as possible. Not only do they need to attend; they need to be actively involved in the worship experience as both participants and as leaders. Our Children’s choir program nurtures, encourages, prepares and equips young people to meet and praise their God in the service of worship. Our adults are trained and are asked to attend various training sessions throughout the year. We believe in a nurturing, relationship building atmosphere where every child is a child of God and therefore loved.
Choir/Worship Skills
1. To recover the primacy of worship in and with the gathered community for all children, youth and adults 2. To develop within young people a deep sense of involvement in and responsibility for the leadership of congregational worship. 3. To develop habits of regular, faithful worship attendance by young persons and their families. 4. To teach young persons that offering themselves and their gift of service to God in worship is a basic form of Christian service that leads to other forms of service. 5. To enhance and influence the vitality of congregational worship through joyous singing and gifts of music. 6. To nurture the deep bonds of relationship between young persons and the clergy, staff, and adults of the congregation. 7. To understand and appreciate expressions of faith through music and other offerings.
The Children’s Wednesday Night “Arts and Soul” program is based on the LOGOS program, which is a midweek program designed to nurture youth, children and adults into a committed faith relationship with Jesus Christ, through a system which builds Christian relationships and prepares them for a lifetime of faithful discipleship. It is a midweek interdisciplinary program involving music, bible study, arts and crafts, family time and games, that helps all involved to connect midweek with Jesus Christ. The entire LOGOS program is two and a half hours long. This year we are doing a mini program of one and a half hours for older kids and an hour for pre-school. Eventually we will move into the full length LOGOS program. For more information visit the LOGOS web site at WWW. thelogosministry.org. June 17-22, 7 adults from the sanctuary choir and hand bell choirs and five children from our art and soul program are going to Lake Junaluska for the annual music and arts camp. The children will participate in grade level choirs every day, learn wonderful music and give a performance at the end of the week. They will also participate in arts and craft sessions and they will have a chance to go swimming every day. The adults will be participating in bell choirs and vocal choirs. For the money, this is a great experience for children, adults and families. Next year we would like to see more children attend. July 26-28. there will be a training seminar in Charlotte, North Carolina for parents who want to get involved and fully immersed with our midweek Art and Soul program for children pre-school to 6th grade. August 15th is Registration for Art and Soul for all children from pre-school to the 6th grade. Registration forms will also be posted on the children’s music web page. August 17-18 is our annual beginning of the year children’s choir retreat. We have a special clinician that will be with us. Her name is Martha Bown. She conducts the Lake Junaluska regional children’s choir called Voices in the Laurel. August 22 Art and Soul for all children will begin. Starting time is at 5:30. Be on the look out for the complete schedule. |
